Taylor Mackenzie Pirelli National Superstock 1000 Champion
Taylor Mackenzie was crowned the Pirelli National Superstock 1000 Champion as he powered his Buildbase BMW to a sixth victory of the campaign in this dramatic, incident packed penultimate round. That gave him an unassailable 32 points lead over his Tyco BMW rival Ian Hutchinson who finished the race in third place.
The 23 year old Scot, who lives in nearby Ashby de la Zouch, dictated terms from the re-start, finishing clear of Michael Rutter, as he gave Stuart Hicken’s team the Stock1000 crown for a second time, Richard Cooper having won it six years earlier.
Farmer had pole but it was Rutter who snatched the initiative on the opening lap, nosing his Bathams SMT BMW in the lead but then making an error at the Melbourne Hairpin which handed the lead back to the former champion. Alex Olsen was third ahead of Mackenzie who was quickly into contention, despite a six place grid penalty, but Hutchinson who had started alongside him was sticking with him. A two rider tangle at Redgate brought out the Safety Car but on the fourth lap, with the race back on in earnest Mackenzie was on the attack taking first Olsen and then Rutter to be running second and only 0.397secs adrift of Farmer.
Hutchinson was running fifth as two riders went down at Melbourne Hairpin and then another two, Sam West and Ashley Buxton, crashed at the Old Hairpin. The red-flags came out with both bikes and riders in the track. The race re-started, over ten laps, with Farmer again out-gunned at the start by Rutter but both were taken by the rapid Mackenzie who had a lead of 0.425secs at the end of the opening lap. Rutter was second from Josh Elliott, Olsen, Hutchinson and Farmer.
Mackenzie bettered the record on the second lap, but Rutter was even faster, as he closed in, the young Scot though reacted with an even faster time to extend his lead to 0.734secs after three laps. Elliott was third from Olsen and Hutchinson while Farmer held on as his Honda bucked wildly. Hutchinson was fighting back after a couple of moments earlier on at Foggys, closing in Olsen, as the scrap for third place intensified with barely three quarters of a second between them. Out front the confident Mackenzie was easing further ahead of Rutter. Hutchinson grabbed fourth on the seventh lap and focussed on his Tyco BMW team-mate Elliott was holding third, though less than half a second ahead, and within a lap, the 14 times Isle of Man TT winner was through into third place.
Elliott tipped off going into the final lap at Goddards while out front Mackenzie was taking his sixth victory of his title winning campaign finishing 1.494secs ahead of Rutter with Hutchinson third from Olsen, Farmer and Adam Jenkinson.
